Adopting from Haiti

Adopting from Haiti is an affordable way to build your family as long as you have patience. The process can be slow, but well worth it.

About the Country

Haiti is located on Hispaniola, an island just east of Cuba and southeast of Florida. This island nation was the first independent nation in Latin America, and the only nation that gained independence through a successful slave rebellion.

The official language of Haiti - and the one used mostly by educated Haitians - is French. The second main language is Haitian Creole and is used by virtually everyone in Haiti. my daughter Adopting from this country is possible because of the poverty-stricken conditions of most of the Haitians. At least 80 percent of the people in Haiti live in poverty, and 54 percent live in abject poverty. Two thirds of all Haitians survive through small-scale subsistence farming, which makes them vulnerable to natural disasters, such as the many tropical storms that ravage the area.

Almost half of all Haitians are illiterate. Haiti is not a member of the Hague Convention, so if you are considering adopting from Haiti, be sure to use a reliable adoption agency.

Who Can Adopt

Patience is the biggest requirement of those adopting from Haiti. Be aware that adopting from Haiti can be a lengthy process that can sometimes take between two and a half to three years to complete. Haitian law does not allow for a Haitian child to travel from the United States to be adopted, and the process to complete an adoption will take 16 to 20 months once you have received a referral.

Those interested in adopting must be 35 or older to adopt. If you are married, you can have a spouse under the age of 35 as long as you are at least 35 yourself and you have been married for ten years and have no biological children. Adopting from this country is also possible for single parents as long as they are 35 years or older.

Children Available

The children who are available for adoption range in age from 18 months on up. Toddlers, older children and sibling groups are also available for adoption. All children must have a release from their surviving parents or legal guardians in order to be adopted. This can only be obtained from the Tribunal de Paix - or Justice of the Peace that has jurisdiction over the child's residence. If the child's biological parents are deceased, then their death certificate must be obtained from the Haitian National Archives.

The Process

You must apply and be accepted by a reliable adoption agency. Once you are matched with a child, you must travel to Haiti and apply for the child to be found eligible for adoption. After adopting your child you can bring him home.
